85% of menstruating women experience Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS).
Let that sink in... Eighty. Five. Percent.

Woman clutching her stomach

As a consequence of the monthly cycle, this means the majority of women you see, at any given time (but predominantly around menstruation), will be experiencing any of the following: mood swings, anxiety, depression, acne, fatigue, headache, stomach/back/muscle pain or cramps, mood swings, feeling upset or irritable, sleeplessness, tiredness, bloating, breast tenderness (mastalgia), skin breakouts, greasy hair, changes in appetite and sex drive. A severe form of PMS where symptoms significantly impact normal life is called Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) which sets in between ovulation and when bleeding starts. PMDD causes a range of severe emotional and physical symptoms.

No matter the severity, women still have to ‘do’ life, and just have to power on through; if they can. And if they can’t? They will often take medication or medical implant devices to relieve the pain and symptoms. And these often bring with them their own host of side effects. After the pain and discomfort of PMS and PMDD though, many women opt for these anyway just so they can function with some semblance of normality.

How do the behavioural, psychological and physical symptoms associated with PMS come about?

This is still not fully understood but largely accepted that PMS and PMDD is all to do with the changes in hormone levels through the menstrual cycle and exacerbated with inflammation arising from these altered hormone levels. So anything we can do to help ameliorate these symptoms, we take. This is where OmegaNZ Premenstrual Support can help.

Taken from the seeds of the Evening Primrose plant (Oenothera biennis), the name comes from the plant blooming in the evening.

As a natural product, Evening Primrose Oil (EPO) has long been a supplement for ameliorating PMS symptoms and traditionally used by women of all ages throughout the centuries.

EPO truly is an underappreciated health supplement.

Primarily EPO's Gamma-Linolenic Acid content can help reduce the internal inflammation associated with PMS. It is also instrumental in maintaining brain function, keeping bones and joints healthy, regulating metabolism and contributing to reproductive health. It is also vital for stimulating skin and hair growth.

What makes OmegaNZ Premenstrual Support so special?

The high-potency of our Evening Primrose Oil greatly helps in its ability to fight inflammation!

How?

High concentration of these important two omega-6 fatty acids:

  • Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA) and
  • Linoleic Acid (LA).
The science-y bit:
Your body converts the LA portion into further GLA once inside your body too. GLA produces a substance called DGLA. All these fatty acids in this metabolic pathway produce the E1 series of PGE1 prostaglandins that fight inflammation.
A large 2016 study found acute inflammation could trigger PMS symptoms like cramping and bloating. The inflammation in PMS commonly comes from increased PG2 prostaglandins that arise from Arachidonic Acid (AA) – an Omega-6 fatty acid which is overabundant in the Western diet. These PG2 prostaglandins are highly inflammatory and it's these Omega-6s that contribute to internal inflammation. Taking EPO helps the body produce the PGE1 prostaglandins that fight the inflammation.

What’s normally given over-the-counter to fight PMS symptoms?

Anti-inflammatories (NSAIDS).

If something natural can reduce inflammation rather than using pharmaceutical products where long-term use effects can include compromised gut, heart, and kidney health, wouldn’t you want to take it?

What about menopause symptoms then?

During menopause oestrogen decreases. Oestrogen is a hormone known to reduce inflammation, therefore, as levels decline during menopause, inflammation in the body increases by default. This inflammation causes terrible discomfort for many women in the form of weight gain (particularly visceral fat which further increases inflammatory responses), sleep difficulties, pain and fatigue amongst many others. It can also induce menopause-related arthritis. Balancing the inflammation in the body by including a supplement with inflammation-lowering GLA can only be beneficial, right?

And, if inflammation in the body is reduced at a whole-body (systemic) level it can only be an overall benefit too right? A reduction in systemic inflammation can aid a decrease in arthritic symptoms, psoriasis/skin issues, gut inflammatory responses, and in turn also support brain function and bone health.

Benefits:

  • reduction in menopause symptoms including hot flashes
  • helps reduce systemic inflammation
  • eases pain
  • eases PMS symptoms
  • helps support brain function
  • contributes to bone health
  • reduces inflammatory skin issues e.g. psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema.

So much more to these little capsules than meets the eye. Get yours today and feel the benefits, like so many other women across the generations have experienced previously.
